Prof Ian Bruce - keynote speaker at BioIndustry Association R&D conference
Professor Ian Bruce, Medical Director of the WTCRF, was recently chosen as the keynote speaker at the Bioindustry Association’s Research and Development conference 2012 at The Wellcome Trust in London.
Professor Bruce gave his talk on the NIHR Translational Research Partnership, a new Department of Health initiative to promote and develop experimental medicine and early phase trials in the UK. This initiative will enable academics, including Manchester-based investigators to partner with the pharmaceutical and biotech industry to play a central role in bringing new medicine through to later phase development.
Professor Ashley Woodcock, Inflammation and Repair institute lead at The University of Manchester (UoM) was also invited to talk. Professor Woodcock described the new Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research (MCCIR). A unique partnership between UoM, GSK and Astra Zeneca that will underpin new drug and target discovery and help Manchester play a central role in early drug discovery in the UK.
Prof Woodcock added "There was great interest in the new MCCIR. There was concern about the loss of Pharma R&D from the UK, and support for this innovative response. A number of potential future collaborators made contact."
Speaking about this opportunity Prof Bruce said "Being invited to speak at this conference was a great opportunity to promote the exciting developments going on in Manchester. We have several follow-up meetings planned and are perfectly placed to explore new collaborative opportunities as a result of this meeting."
